I have to get this out of me:
Western culture, or rather democracy coupled with consumerism, have created a very comfortable society. Everything is convenient for the majority of people. I don't think we know what a price this costs. It is the "quiet desperation" that Pink Floyd sung about. It is a lack of struggle. Fulfillment in life comes ONLY from struggle (in my opinion). In ancient history, men fought for food, water, land. Everyday was a fight for survival, which, as you could imagine, is a very gratifying task. But, we always seek to make our lives easier. It's natural! But it's a slippery slope because these days, what is there to fight for? This is a condition really only felt in the "developed world." I am also not talking about those that are very passionate and fight for their beliefs, be it through activism, politics, science... I am talking about the multitude that work in jobs they don't care about and in their free time, they consume thoughts from other people. Media.
Again, unless you fight for SOMETHING that you believe in, you will be empty and unfulfilled. And to fight is to inevitably be uncomfortable. So, unless you're strong enough to be uncomfortable, you will be doomed to live a unintelligent and trite existance. I think we've gotten weak for the sake of our comfort. I'm no different, but I believe I am changing that.
That's all. |
